B.Coins that used for trade prior to the construction of the Dagabo in the 3 Cent AD , was found when the site around the Dagabo was excavated to the bed rock. The present site was close to the Eastern gate of the city  and there was market tow. The is inscriptional  evidence of  a Bank or a Guild was located in the vicinity of the Jetawanarama  , where monies and grain was deposited and the interest accrued was utilised for various functions of monasteries etc.  The finds of most of the coins of  traders from various countries , been found there amoung the lost or dropped coins used is not a surprise.

There are a large number of  stone laid about the 7 Cent AD in the main courtyard  of the Dagabo. These stones have been inscribed with names of those who donated the stones and other details of the donor. The money spent for the donations gives the Type of Currency in vogue. The names are

C. The people of the 7/8 Cent AD who donated towards the construction of Stone or granite paved terrace, called the currency or coins of that period Huna, Kalanda’s, De-Aka and Aka. The Kalanda and the Aka coin was found on site of the Stone Terrace, the construction of which  is dated to 7 Cent AD.

They also used the word Ran[ Gold] such as Ran Tun kalandak,  which means three kalandas of Gold.or they left out kalandak and used the short word for same as Ran or Gold’s. DASA KALADAK1RAN TISAK

  1. The present Hataras Kotuwa and the Kota were built by the British. It has nothing to do with the original structure.
    The continuous use of the image showing the British upper structure is erroneous, incorrect and misleading.

  2. No wonder that British coins dropped during that period of building was found there, the paved courtyard was built during the days of Gold coins as coins of that period was found. The weli-seya coin finds are those of the Lion and 4 Dots or Bull and Dot coins, perhaps in use during the period of building Jetawana. Lion and Dot coins is believed to be issues of King Mahasen.
