THE PUNCH MARKED COINS OF ASOKA AND SUCCESSORS.
The period of King Asoka, the King of Sri Lanka dispatched two delegation to Asoka Court and Rev Mihinda Asoka Son intorduced the principles of Buddhism to Sri Lanka, Theri Sangamitta brought the Bo-sapling and planted it at Anuradhapura. The coins of Asoka is found in large number, both as hoards and stray finds at all ancient sites of Sri Lanka.
These silver coins were listed into series Vb, VIb and VII by PL Gupta Hardekar in the 1990’s. Sunsequently numismatists in India has further allocated the coins to particular Kings of the Dynasty. As soon as they are available to me they will be published.
These coins are small and thicker than those of Series II , III an IV , but they are heaviers. In series VII the Sun and the Six Armed Mark are not found. The distiguishing marks of the series are.
