MINTING OF KALANDAS OF GOLD.

Moulds of Gold Coins found at Abeyagiri Monastery in 1993. These were published by Mr TG Kulatunga in UNESCO Project Sri Lanka  Cultural Triangle Journal of    .These were  found along with the unfinished pieces of Jewelry by a pond near the second Samadhi Buddha Statue in Abeyagiri Monastery. Shown below are these  moulds[ No 1, 3 to9] along with an mould of an Aka[No2 – one eight of a Kalanda] found in a different location. Two  Kalandas of Gold no 877 and 947 has been found by the pond on an earlier excavation. The photo of the mould and an inversion of impressions generated by the computer is shown next to the moild.
